ABOUT DON DIETRICH

Don grew up in the small town of Deloraine, Manitoba where he lived a half block away from the Doc Bonar Arena and started skating at the age of 3. He was a very gifted athlete and enjoyed playing all sports, but hockey was his true passion. He had dreamed of playing in the National Hockey League and fulfilled that dream at age 20 when he signed a professional contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. Don played for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League for three seasons before playing 10 years of professional hockey in the NHL, AHL, and Europe. He retired after the 1990-91 season due to a serious knee injury that he sustained years prior. Don and his wife, Nadine, and his three boys moved back to Deloraine in 1994 where he became heavily involved in volunteering his time to developing young hockey players throughout Southwestern Manitoba. He worked with the local senior team and the Southwest Midget AAA Cougars. Don also established The Breakfast Club program throughout small communities in Manitoba where young players would come out twice per week before school to work on skills. Don and many other coaches donated their time to help players grow their game and work on skill development. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from Don and be able to call him a mentor. He loved to be out on the ice sharing his knowledge and love for the game with anyone who wanted to improve. He was incredibly passionate and had so much to offer to young players. I, and many other players that were lucky enough to work with him, will be forever grateful for all the time and effort he put into making us better hockey players.

Don was not only a mentor on the ice, but off the ice as well through his courageous attitude, selflessness, resiliency, positive outlook on life, and fearlessness. Don was a true warrior and inspired so many people throughout his life. Don was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1995 at the age of 34 and battled this fight every day as it progressively got worse. He was also faced with an aggressive type of cancer in 1999 called leiomyosarcoma and was given six months to live. Over the course of the next 21 years, he had 5 separate battles with cancer and defied the odds multiple times. When Don was first told he had cancer, he reckoned his old coach saying, “Get up off the ice! Get back into the game!” Don never felt sorry for himself and approached his Parkinson’s disease and cancer with the mindset that he will overcome and beat any obstacle that life throws at him. What he learned through sports and hockey was that nothing was guaranteed, you had to show up each day and perform. He applied this to how he lived his life and that “Life isn’t guaranteed either. You have to make life happen.” Don lived for today. He would look at the man in the mirror and considered himself a lucky man for being able to live out his dream. He can be proud of himself for the battle he put forward. Don was an inspiration to anyone he crossed paths with, and it is with great honour that I get to tell his story and carry on his legacy.
DON IN THE NEWS

THE TOURNAMENT
PURPOSE
The purpose of the tournament is to honour Don and his legacy. He was a role model, hero, mentor, and an inspiration to so many people throughout his life. He dedicated his time to developing young players in the local communities and giving back to the game that he loved so much. By holding this event, we can celebrate his life and raise money for the Don Dietrich Memorial Fund, which supports youth sports by providing organizations with resources to develop their players and get more kids involved in sports.
PAST EVENTS
Our first annual Don Dietrich Memorial Road Hockey Tournament held in 2022 raised over $10,000 and we were fortunate enough to raise around the same in 2023. The proceeds have been allocated amongst minor hockey, minor ball, and the Breakfast Club program in Deloraine, MB which are all programs that Don was involved in and impacted greatly. In the 3rd annual tournament we had 105 players register to play and received tremendous support. In 2024 the proceeds were donated to Deloraine School for new gym equipment and to the Deloraine Swimming Pool.
THE LOGO
The logo was created from the picture of Don when he skated on Shamrock Lake in the Rocky Mountains for the Molson Canadian promotion and its #ANYTHINGFORHOCKEY contest in 2015.
He and 10 others were selected to go skate on an NHL-sized rink on Lake Shamrock. When the helicopter rose over the Rocky Mountains, Don’s eyes filled with tears and he recalled it being Heaven on Earth.
It was an experience of a lifetime and Don always felt at his best on the ice. Hockey was everything to him and where he felt most alive.
